Craniosacral Therapy (CST)
What is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral Therapy involves light-touch, hands-on techniques to evaluate and treat the craniosacral system: the brain and the spinal cord, including the membranes, fluid, tissue and bones that surround them.
“CST” aims to restore the rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid pulsing around the brain and the spinal cord. It is a safe and non-invasive treatment to remove restriction, release tension and restore the body’s balance. A session may leave you calm, energized and with greater clarity of mind.
The craniosacral system contains and maintains the central nervous system, which regulates the functions of the rest of the body, such as movement, breathing, circulation and digestion. Therapy aims to improve the rhythm and flow of cerebrospinal fluid, in a way that nourishes and cleanses the nervous system and enhances nerve conductivity.
The practitioner uses gentle hand contact on the head and the spine, in particular the skull and the sacrum, to evaluate and manipulate the craniosacral rhythm, the movement of cerebrospinal fluid around the system. This fluid can be palpated via the body’s network of connective tissues, or fascia.
People receiving CST report a wide variety of experiences, including:
- relaxation
- a sense of ease
- warmth
- a tingling sensation
- increased energy
- greater balance and
- deepening self-awareness.
Unresolved tensions from injury, trauma, surgery or stress can impact the proper function of the craniosacral system. These extrinsic pressures, whether physical or emotional, may restrict the normal movement of those tissues, or obstruct the movement of those cerebrospinal fluids.
What is the craniosacral rhythm?
The effects can be observed in the abnormal range, asymmetry or decrease of the craniosacral rhythm. Subtle palpation aims to adjust and improve this flow, a pulsation produced by the natural movement of these fluids around the body.
The practitioner senses tensions in the body and stimulates the body’s innate ability to rebalance itself. Treatment induces the natural healing process to engage and regulates the environment of the central nervous system.
The gentle manipulation involved in this therapy, with pressure applied to about the weight of a coin, means it is appropriate for all ages, from children through to older age, as well as during pregnancy.
